Theme: Populating Mars & The work of Elon Musk (SpaceX).

Learning intentions for this lesson:

  1. Learning about Mars and how it could be colonised.
  2. Learn about Elon Musk – his bio.
  3. Learn how Elon Musk plans to conquer Mars.
  4. Minecraft: Continue to create the Mars colony in groups? Make some tweaks as you learn more about Mars and the challenges for sustaining human life on the planet.
  5. Prompt students to think like a scientist and engineer.

About the video:

Elon Musk recently unveiled SpaceX’s latest plans for building cities on Mars: Its Starship rocket. This rocket is 5.5 times taller than SpaceX’s first rocket, the Falcon 1. And could be flying people to space as early as 2020 if Musk has anything to say about it. If all goes according to plan, Musk aims to have the first test flight for Starship within the next one to two months.

ACTIVITY: In your groups, discuss Elon Musk’s plans to populate Mars.

About the video:

Elon Musk wants to build a metropolis on Mars starting in 2024.

Who is Elon Musk?

https://youtu.be/kTh-28ubvCU

About the video:

Elon Musk. Successful business entrepreneur, space travel fanatic & even meme review host was born and raised in South Africa. After dropping out of Stanford University during the internet boom of the ninety’s, Musk became the majority shareholder in PayPal, before eventually selling it and going on to create SpaceX and become CEO of Tesla motors. He has dreams of colonising Mars and wants to make space travel cost a tenth of what it does today.

Challenge: Design a small Mars colony in Minecraft.

Competition: Marking sheet

Creativity = 20 points

Scientific concepts = 20

Engineering concepts = 20

Layout and design = 20

Functionality = 20

TOTAL = 100

ACTIVITY:

In your groups make a simple timeline – showing the biography of Elon Musk – include his achievements. Show how he was able to get into the powerful financial situation he is currently in. For example: How he created PayPal and then sold it for a considerable profit. Now continue in your groups. Simple pen and pencil sketches are fine. Jot down the estimated dates and the significant events in his life on the timeline.

Here is an example of what such a timeline could look like:

Description

Product details: 138 pages, 10,500 words, including many images, sketches, and video links.

Ten free lessons: I am an Aeronautical Engineer (Modeling in Minecraft and a STEM PROJECT – Water-propelled Rocket).

Complete lessons and resources for teachers and students (Secondary School).

Age groups:

Complete lessons and resources for teachers and students (Secondary School). Suitable for 14-year-old to 17-year-old students (High School). Could also be adapted for senior primary school (12- to 14-year-old students).

OVERVIEW:

This resource (set of 10 lessons) include everything related to aeronautical science and space exploration. Teachers and students will find it exciting and very useful. The ten lessons include:

  • The study of the International Space Station (ISS).
  • Specific aspects of sleeping in space, eating in space, the effect of gravity (bone density weakens/eye pressure drops, etc.) and more are discussed.
  • The work of Herman Potočnik and Wernher Von Braun (space research pioneers) are touched on. Space-wheel-concepts are explored.
  • Elon Musk, from SpaceX, is also studied.
  • Ideas for living on Mars and the Moon are explored.
  • Space wheel gravitation, concepts of Potočnik & Von Braun, are explained.
  • A STEM project — design and build water-propelled rockets — is included.
  • Minecraft Education activities are included — related to the lessons (Mars or Moon colonies.
  • Additional – at the end of the resource – some of the author’s freehand sketches (fountain pen and watercolours): Mars Pod (housing), and a Mars Rover. References to Designboom and AI Space Factory articles.

Minecraft Education Activities:

Fun activities like modelling the ISS, designing a spacecraft and designing a home in outer space (for example, design a pod for Mars living) — are some of the lessons’ challenges. The ten fun classes cover a large area of space study. Scientific concepts are embedded and conclude a STEM-based competition (building a water rocket and competition). As a teacher, I have delivered these lessons to Junior Secondary School students, and they love it! Note some aspects in the lessons have been repeated – repetition is useful to improve knowledge retention.

Overarching Learning Intentions:

  1. Learn about space living, space travel
  2. Learn about living on Mars and the challenges it poses
  3. Learn important scientific and engineering concepts required for space design
  4. Learn about Elon Musk od SpaceX
  5. Learn about the past space engineers and aeronautical experts like Herman Potočnik and Wernher von Braun. The pioneers of rotating and suspended (‘flying-wheel’ design) space stations.
