Total of 22 pages (1289 words with images and video links).

KEYWORDS/PHRASES WITH DESCRIPTIONS: SUSTAINABLE FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS

Solar panel (photovoltaic panel and battery):

Rainwater tanks (white and grey water):

Solar Thermal panel (sun heats water):

LED lights of natural sunlight (skylights):

Building material (passive solar design) – bricks/stone/rocks heat up from the sun- heats the home for free):

Passive Ventilation: Natural flow up into stacks and out (warm stale air rises):

Passive solar design: Passive solar design refers to the use of the sun’s energy for the heating and cooling of living spaces by exposure to the sun. When sunlight strikes a building, the building materials can reflect, transmit, or absorb the solar radiation.

Green Roof (plants/grass converts carbon dioxide into fresh oxygen):

Wind Turbines: Large or small:

Green walls: Interior and exterior:

Large glass windows (allows sun in – sun heats walls and floors in winter):

Deciduous trees (shed leaves in winter – allows the sun to heat the building):

Description

DESIGN A MODERN SUSTAINABLE HOUSE ON MINECRAFT EDU.

SHORT SUMMARY OF THE LESSON AND REQUIRED TASKS:

  • Freehand sketch of the concept or idea.
  • Model a simple idea or concept of the house on SketchUp.
  • Individually or in your group (you choose your mates) create a modern sustainable house in Minecraft Edu.
  • Create a short video of your sustainable house – screen recording. Focus on your sustainable features and ideas.
  • Use Windows Movie Maker (software) to produce and edit your video.
  • Competition based – individually or in groups. See marking schedule.

Design Brief:

Design a sustainable house OR  a barn conversion OR a shipping container home in Minecraft Edu. You can do this individually or in groups. Prizes for different size groups and individual efforts.

*KEEP IN MIND: The second challenge will be to create a garden/farm to sustain the inhabitants of the house. For example chicken farm, farm animals (cows, etc.) and more. In other words, self-sustainable!

Situation:

You are a famous architect. However, your engineering skills and sustainability knowledge are not so well developed. You have to do some research to learn more before you attempt to design the modern sustainable home.

Marking Schedule:

Research = 20 points

Freehands sketches = 20 points

Simple sketch or design in Sketchup = 20 points (screenshots – use snipping tool)

Minecraft design of the sustainable building = 40 points

Engineering features = 60 points

Short video (recording – video and still images with text) = Windows movie maker (editing).  To record the screen (video): Control-Alt-R = 40 points

TOTAL = 200 POINTS

  • Lollies and choc bars
