Ebook Description: Text = 1320 words with many images and video links. 20 pages (size A4) in total.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn about Antarctica in general – the shape and form, the size, the geography, the features, weather patterns, nature, living animals, birds, insects, and more. The different research stations in Antarctica. The different countries involved in research.
- Students to consider Sustainable Architecture: For example, Halley 6 the British research station with fully relocatable pods on skis.
- Explore how Minecraft Education can accommodate a research station within a biome context for ‘Antarctica.’ For example, ice spikes biomes.
- Students to extend their innovation and creativity to design a unique research station individually or in teams.
Driving questions:
What is important for a building in Antarctica? What are the basics required for sustainable living (food, water, shelter, and more)? What type of research is being done on Antarctica? Of what value is the research for the human race? What are the plans for Antarctica? From an architectural perspective, what are the considerations for the best possible building materials in severe conditions?
Activities and tasks:
- Do research on the research station aspects in Antarctica. See the learning intentions for details.
- Collaborate in teams on the design and layout of the station. Consider the goals and objectives of the station.
- Come up with a basic plan for the research station. Choose building materials.
- Construct the research station by implementing all new research knowledge and own scientific and engineering concepts. Implement all the knowledge and ideas into the design.
- Critique and evaluate the design. Make modifications.
- Produce the final design and share with the teacher.
Description
IN THIS LESSON YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT:
- Will you build a snow hut OR something else?
- Glacier biome: How could the glacier biome be used in the construction of the house?
- How will you produce food?
- Transportation: How will you get to your house/ or station and back to civilisation?
- How will you get fresh drinking water?
- What will the sleeping quarters, kitchen, bathrooms, look like?
- Will you be hunting or fishing or will you take food with you? How will you hunt and fish?
- Could you grow vegetables? Can you grow vegetables in Antarctica?
- Heating: How will you stay warm?
- Washing: How will you wash and dry your clothes?
- Where will you get power from (electricity)?
- How will you break through the ice to get to your house or research station?
- How will you communicate with the outside world?
- Consider transport around the research station or house? Snowmobile?
