John to Ben: “I will reveal my secrets and truths to you.”

John Martinez and Ben Ogle—two trusted friends—sat on an old wooden bench overlooking the quiet lake, the early morning mist drifting like a thin veil across the water. The air smelled of damp earth and fresh pine. Birds called out to the waking world, and the soft glow of sunrise pressed gently through the trees. It was peaceful—almost too serene for the heaviness John carried in his chest.

Ben studied his friend’s face. He had known John long enough to recognise the quiet storm behind his eyes.

“You’ve been awfully reflective this morning,” Ben said, nudging him lightly. “What’s going on inside that head of yours?”

John exhaled slowly, his breath visible in the cool air. “Wisdom,” he said quietly. “Hard-won wisdom.”

Ben raised an eyebrow. “The kind you earn through bruises?”

John gave a short, humourless laugh. “More like scars.” He paused, gripping the edge of the bench. “Ben… I made a huge mistake. After God forgave me, I opened up and shared everything—my entire story. I thought that honesty alone would protect me.” His voice trembled slightly. “But people heard it. The wrong people. The ones who hated me. And they used my confession against me.”

Ben’s expression softened, and he shifted closer.

“I’ve been in jail for three months,” John said. “Because of my past lifestyle—cheating with money, cutting corners, not paying my taxes fully. I thought I was safe because God had forgiven me. But the world… the world wasn’t as gracious.”

The lake remained silent, as if listening.

John continued, “Now I’m realising something. Testimony is powerful, but wisdom must govern it. I should’ve been honest, yes—but careful. Discerning. Jesus said to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. I ignored the first part.”

Ben nodded. “That’s a hard lesson.”

“Yeah,” John whispered. “But a necessary one. It’s become part of something bigger I’ve been thinking about—wisdom keys. Truths that shape how we grow, how we speak, how we move forward after being forgiven.”

He looked out over the water, where sunlight now shimmered in a path of gold.

“That’s why I wanted to talk today,” John said. “To sort through these lessons—these wisdom keys God has carved into my life.”

And so, sitting beside the lake as the world gently woke around them, John began to share the insights born from scars, grace, and hard-earned transformation.

Those reflections became the heartbeat of this post:
Ever-Increasing Wisdom.

————0————

Dear reader, I have three wisdom keys for you today.

This morning, I took time out in nature with a friend. The breeze was gentle, the birds were awake, and our conversation turned toward one of life’s great treasures—wisdom. We reflected on what the Bible calls “the principal thing” (Proverbs 4:7), and three transformative yet straightforward wisdom keys emerged.

Wisdom Key 1: Your emotional scars qualify you to speak and to influence

Your scars tell a story—not of defeat, but of survival, restoration, and grace. Because you have walked through hardship, you can strengthen others with authenticity. You have “been there, done that, got the T-shirt,” and God uses our testimonies to help the broken.

In Scripture, we see this principle echoed:
“…when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”Luke 22:32 (KJV)

From stars to scars, God shapes you into someone who can speak life with weight and compassion. Or is it scars to stars? You decide.

Wisdom Key 2: Share your testimony wisely

While God has forgiven you completely, the world has not. You have an enemy who roams about, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). Some people are driven by malice, envy, or hatred, and they may weaponise your past.

So be bold in your faith—but wise in your communication.

Jesus said,
“Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”Matthew 10:16 (KJV)

Testimony is powerful, but discernment is essential. Think before you share. Protect what God has rebuilt in you.

Wisdom Key 3: After salvation, refine your communication and behaviour

Once Christ has saved and washed you, you can no longer operate the way you used to. Transformation must reach both heart and mouth. Some believers—though forgiven—slip back into old patterns because they have not renewed their thinking.

Scripture is clear:
“Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”Romans 12:2 (KJV)

Invite the Holy Spirit to reshape your words and reactions. Ask a mature Christian friend to evaluate your communication lovingly. Growth accelerates in humility and accountability.

Daily Questions for Ever-Increasing Wisdom

To conclude, wisdom is not a single moment—it is a lifestyle. We can refine and elevate our thinking every day. As you begin your morning devotion, write down and reflect on these three questions daily. Then, every week, go back and read your notes. Endeavour to memorise them. When something similar happens, apply the new wisdom. It will become part of your repertoire. Here are those 3 critical questions:

  1. What did I learn yesterday?
  2. What mistake did I make yesterday, and how can I improve immediately?
  3. What three things can I focus on today to grow in wisdom—in my relationships, in how I treat people, in how I manage finances, and in every decision I make as I acknowledge God?

And when offence comes—and it will—ask: How will I respond in a Christ-like way?

Here is the Scripture that anchors it all:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge Him,
and He will direct your paths.”

Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)

May the Lord increase your wisdom daily, deepen your discernment, and guide your footsteps. Walk with Him, learn from Him, and allow His Spirit to refine every part of your life. Increase your wisdom.
